SAINT JOHN, NB – The Saint John Riptide were looking to make it three-straight victories when they took on the Halifax Hurricanes this afternoon at Harbour Station. The Atlantic division's top two teams were set to face off in what could only be described as a battle.
Saint John looked good early as they were able to gain a slight advantage over the visiting Hurricanes on the scoreboard. Darin Mency lead the way as the Riptide grabbed a 22-18 lead after one quarter of play. Halifax pushed back a bit in the second quarter but the Riptide would match them on offence and hold the same four-point edge at the break. 46-42 was the score at halftime.
In the third quarter Saint John took it to the division leaders once again and added to their lead. Horace Wormely turned red hot and helped his squad extend the lead by three points, 74-67 going into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter saw no shortage of excitement and nail-bitter moments as the Hurricanes mounted a comeback.
They would eventually take the lead in the frame but could not hang onto it as the Riptide did their best to give the home fans something to cheer about. A foul was called against the Hurricanes with just seconds remaining and the Riptide in-bounded the ball. Cliff Clinkscales stole the ball from Haakim Johnson and fed it to CJ Washington who put up a last second shot to tie it. However, the shot rimmed out and the buzzer sounded to give the Riptide a 97-95 win.
Darin Mency was the high man with 23 points while Haakim Johnson posted 22 points and 12 rebounds. Horace Wormely finished with 18 points and 11 assists with Gabe Freeman also getting 18 points. Billy White lead the Hurricanes with 23 points on the day.
