Hurricanes get back into win column with victory at home against River Lions

Halifax, (NS) – The Halifax Hurricanes and the Niagara River Lions met on the hardwood for the first time this season Saturday night at the Scotiabank Centre in Downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Hurricanes came into this game on a season high three game losing streak.
 
Both teams were relatively even throughout the first half, with the Lions outscoring the Hurricanes 26 - 23 in the first quarter. The second quarter saw numerous lead changes, and the Hurricanes were able to finish the quarter on a 7-0 run, finishing the half even with the Lions at 50-50. Halifax kept the pressure on the Lions in the third quarter behind timely shooting from guard Ta’quan Zimmerman, outscoring the Lions 25-20 in the frame. The final quarter was much the same with the River Lions keeping the game close up until the last few minutes when Halifax pulled away, finishing the game with a 102-92 win.
 
Halifax had five players in double digits in the game and were lead by Guard Ta’quan Zimmerman who had 19 points on 6-10 shooting from beyond the three point line. Forward CJ Washington had a double double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Reserve Guard Joey Haywood had a great game off the bench, scoring 13 points in 19 minutes of play. Guard Mike Poole and Forward Tyrone Watson added 16 and 12 points respectively.
 
The River Lions were led by Guard Nick Okorie and Centre Carl Hall who had 18 points each. Hall would add 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. The Lions also got 16 points from former Moncton Miracle Guard “Scoop” Jardine. The River Lions leading scorer Kirk Williams Jr. was ejected in the second half after receiving consecutive technicals and making contact with a referee.
 
The Hurricanes next game will be Wednesday, April 19 at 7pm at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax against the Cape Breton Highlanders. The Hurricanes lost the last meeting of these two NBL Canada Atlantic Conference teams.
