After review of the ballot of the eligible 2017-18 Rookie of the Year candidates, it was determined that Guillame Payen-Bouchard of the Niagara River Lions who was announced as the winner as voted on by the coaches is considered ineligible as he had prior professional experience last season and therefore not considered a rookie.
By disqualifying Bouchard's name from the ballot, the 2018 Rookie of the Year honour is awarded to Jaylon Tate of the Niagara River Lions who finished in second place behind the Bouchard in voting.
Jaylon Tate, a 6'3" guard who played collegiately at Illinois, was a dominant star for the Niagara River Lions in his rookie year. As a starter in 31 of his 39 games, Tate averaged 13.1 points per game with Niagara; he also led the entire NBL with an average of 7.53 assists per game.
"We apologize to all those impacted by the oversight and in particular I wish to extend an personal apology to Guillame Payen-Bouchard and Jaylon Tate. This was a regrettable error that shouldn't have happened and we will endeavour to ensure that it does not take place again. I take full responsibility for the mistake made." said deputy commissioner Audley Stephenson.
