SWSE Unveils NBLC Sudbury Franchise Name

(Greater Sudbury, ON.) Today, SW SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT announced the name of the first National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) franchise for the Northern Ontario market. The Sudbury FIVE Basketball team, known locally as The FIVE, will begin play in the Sudbury Community Arena, competing in the 8 th NBL Canada season, beginning in November 2018 (schedule to be released in August 2018).

Team owner, Dario Zulich, revealed the Name and Brand alongside, Deputy Commissioner Audley Stephenson of the NBL Canada and Agency of Record Launchpad Creative's Head, Clifton Skelliter. "We are following through on the vision we put forward to redefine the entertainment landscape. I am so excited about The FIVE because it represents basketball passion and culture. It is symbolic of the region's traditional area code 705 where Greater Sudbury centers the 5 major urban cities," said Zulich. "Beyond geography, The FIVE, also represents the area's nick name, The Big Nickel, the obvious relationship with the rich history of underground mining because historically we are the number one Nickel Producer in the world."

"The NBL Canada is eager to see the expansion north into new markets and especially, relationships," said Stephenson. "Dario and his team represents a vision that has enormous potential for our sport and our entertainment across the country and we look forward the energy and passion he brings to this city, to our basketball community across the country. I love the vibe and feel that the team name and brand represents. This is going to make people across the country re-evaluate what they think of Sudbury in Northern Ontario."

"Last year, together with Andrew (Dale – VP Marketing SWSE), we launched a naming campaign which drew a lot of excitement and engagement," said Skelliter. "This gave our team at Launchpad Creative the opportunity to review the amazing ideas from the community and narrow it down before the group chose between a number of finalists. The name informs the tone and feel of the brand that we developed as well as the way the brand interacts with the market. We believe that this team and brand has the potential to inspire a lot of people. It's going to be great!"

SW Sports and Entertainment has been committed to the advancement of live sports in our region for several years. They have proposed a vision that redefines entertainment in Northeastern Ontario and Western Quebec, including live sports, concert and touring attraction as well as shows and conferences that make Greater Sudbury the destination of choice in a world class facility. The National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada; Ligue nationale de basketball du Canada) is a Canadian professional men's basketball league. The NBL was founded in 2011, when three teams formerly of the Premier Basketball League joined with four new franchises to form the NBL's "Original Seven". By 2017, the league had grown to ten teams, with six located in the Atlantic provinces and four in Ontario. The 2017 defending champions are the London Lightning. The league's season begins in November and ends in April of the following year.
