2019 NBLC Finals Begin Wednesday, May 8th

Toronto, Ontario — The National Basketball League of Canada announces that the 2019 NBLC Finals will begin on Wednesday May 8, 2019 when the Moncton Magic play host to the St. John's Edge at the Avenir Centre in a best of seven series. The Finals will be a 2-2-1-1-1 format with the first pair of games taking place in Moncton followed by two games at the Mile One Centre in Newfoundland. The remaining three games if necessary will be alternated between venues.

The 2019 NBLC Finals features a pair of teams who are both making their debut appearance in the championship round in only their second year of existence. The Windsor Express first accomplished the feat in 2014 where they went on to capture their first of two NBL Canada championships.

The St. John's Edge earned a trip to the Finals after defeating the KW Titans in six games to capture the Central Division title. Whereas the Magic needed all seven games to outlast the reigning Atlantic Division champions, Halifax Hurricanes.

During the regular season, these teams faced each other five times with the Magic winning the season series 4-1.  The lifetime head-to-head marks for both teams, encompassing the past two seasons, provides the Magic with a 5-3 series advantage.

Three players on this year's championship finals squads have a chance to earn their second (or third) championship ring.  Moncton's Billy White won a championship while a player with the Halifax Hurricanes in 2015-16; St. John's Junior Cadougan picked up a title with the London Lightning in 2018.  And St. John's emergency player Kyle Johnson can become only the second player to claim three consecutive championships (Joel Friesen achieved this mark for Halifax in 2016, and London in 2017-18; at that time, Johnson was a teammate of Friesen's in London).

While this will be St. John's head coach Steve Marcus' first time in the finals, Moncton head coach Joe Salerno will reach the finals round for the third time in his NBL Canada career; he was the head coach for the Summerside / Island Storm in 2012-13 and 2013-14, when that squad reached the championship round in consecutive seasons.

"Congratulations and sincere appreciation are definitely in order to both clubs for reaching the Finals and demonstrating to the entire basketball community the best of what NBL Canada has to offer", said deputy commissioner Audley Stephenson. "The pathway to the championship round  wasn't easy for either team but I fully expect both clubs to put forth a tremendous effort in what will be a spectacular series."
